For a Linux ext2 floppy do: mkfs.ext2 /dev/fd0. And now you need to high level format it. For an unformatted disk, do not select this option. The command fdformat /dev/fd0 low-level formats a floppy disk. Remember, when you format a disk, any existing information contained on the disk is lost. Format Disk as FAT 12: This is the default format used for most floppy disks. You have now successfully created a floppy image and overwritten the default boot-program. Finally, overwrite the stock MBR of the floppy with your custom myBoot.bin program: dd bs1 count378 ifmyBoot.bin offloppy.img seek62 convnotrunc. Give the name of the "drive letter" as an argument of the disk to be formatted. dd bs1 count378 ofmyBoot.bin iffloppy.img skip62 convnotrunc. To format a floppy disk for DOS, writing an empty MS-DOS filesystem to the disk in the process, use mformat, which is in the mtools package: aptitude install mtools Then format the floppy: mkfs.msdos /dev/fd0 mke2fs /dev/fd0įirst, you will need to install the dosfstools package: aptitude install dosfstools Ensure that the disk is inserted rightside-up. If you want a blank Linux formatted floppy, then you can use the command mke2fs. Make sure that the disk is inserted before you go looking for it on your computer. If you are using the second floppy drive, then just replace /dev/fd0 with /dev/fd1 in these instructions. The first floppy drive in Linux is /dev/fd0 and the second one is /dev/fd1.
